Background and Development
“Almost Dead” was recorded between April 2021 and January 2022. This came after a March 2021 announcement from J Molley’s management, Never Broke, that the rapper was taking a break from music due to mental illness.
J Molley used his time away from the public to record “Almost Dead”. On the mixtape, J Molley speaks about his personal journey to healing with the hope of encouraging others people suffering with mental illness recognise and seek help.
This mixtape was not meant to be the next part of J Molley’s career, in fact his next album was 90% done by the time he decided to work on Almost Dead.
More than anything, J Molley felt like it would be an injustice to his core fans for him to move on without giving them insight into the most important part of his journey. He also felt like it was his obligation to provide representation within the South African entertainment industry for all those dealing with mental illness.
Singles
The first single off the mixtape, “Up To” was released on Friday 11 February 2022. Its music video was then released a week later on Thursday 17 February 2022.
